Tuning Out the Static

Discover practical ways to tune out the static, regain clarity, and come back to center in both your professional and personal life.

We all know what it means to “tune out the static,” but what does it really mean in our day-to-day lives? Life is busy and full of noise, yet sometimes the biggest distraction isn’t what’s around us, it’s the never-ending thought loop inside our own heads. I found myself in that exact spot not too long ago, and here’s what I learned.

There’s no hiding it, my plate is full, both personally and professionally. Some of that fullness comes because it has to be, and some because I choose it. Over the last six months or so, I noticed myself giving way to the static, the swirls and wooshes of everything inside and outside myself making waves and noise. Some of it stems from a full schedule and related obligations, but more comes from progress and change, growth that is exciting but also overwhelming.

On the personal front, if you know me, you know I am a single parent. That is a big woosh right there! I am proud to share that my son will be graduating with his associate’s degree in May and heading off to a university this fall. He is navigating the “where,” while I am working to figure out the “how.” This is a major change for him, and for me too. Life changes abound!

Professionally, I have several irons in the fire, including a big project several years in the making that will finally see the light of day in the coming weeks. Change is abundant here too, and it is these personal and professional points where the static can creep in. I even found myself taking a step back from my business social media and blogging in the past several months. Why? Because I needed to refocus and come back to center.

Coming back to center means taking a deliberate pause to sort out priorities, quiet distractions, and focus on the tasks and decisions that matter most. While it is not always simple, tuning out the static is something we need as much professionally as personally. That pause creates space to think, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters. Some noise around us is positive. For example, a colleague’s successes can motivate and inspire us while offering useful insights. Other noise, such as industry trends or what another department or competitor are doing, can feel overwhelming and lead to unnecessary comparison. The key is to notice patterns:

  • Which voices are genuine and unique?
  • Which messages feel repetitive or surface-level?
  • Where is the real value we can tap into for our own work and career?
  • Which opportunities will move our career, team, and/or organization forward in meaningful ways?

Being intentional about what we tune into and what we let fade into the background helps us show up more effectively, make better decisions, and create space for the things that matter most. It also allows us to lift those around us, rather than pulling them into the void of the static.

Finding the space to tune out the static is not just a nice idea. It is essential for showing up fully in both life and work. When we step back, notice the noise, and intentionally focus on what matters, we create room for clarity, creativity, connection, and My Word of 2026, expansion. The benefits ripple through your career, the teams you are a part of, and the professional spaces around you.

So, here are my questions for you: What changes are happening in your personal or professional world? Where do you feel the urge to step back, tune out the noise, and return to center?

Take a moment this week to identify one area where the static is holding you back. Step back, center yourself, and focus on what truly adds value while letting the rest fade. Better yet, offer a helping hand to a friend or colleague to support them in turning out the static. I would love to hear your strategies and insights. Share your thoughts in the comments or connect with me to continue the conversation about showing up fully in both our professional and personal worlds. At the end of the day, our personal and professional lives influence each other and are more connected than we often realize.
