As we wrap up 2025 and our blog series on Leveraging Adult Learning Principles at Work, it feels fitting to explore the principle of Orientation to Learning. Simply put, when information is relevant, it naturally sparks interest, leads us to engage, and toward application. Why? Because it matters by connecting directly to what we do and the impact we can make.
If you’ve followed the series, you’ve likely noticed both the similarities as well as the unique aspects of each principle. Orientation to learning is no exception. At its core, this principle emphasizes relevance and significance, giving learners something tangible to work with and act upon. It’s about taking knowledge and creating the vision to translate it into meaningful outcomes.
Orientation to learning is closely linked with readiness to learn. Together, these principles help us move from understanding into action. In today’s fast-paced workplaces, employees are often asked to quickly adapt to new processes, tools, or priorities. Orientation to learning makes this possible by ensuring that change is meaningful. When team members see the direct relevance of new information to their roles and contributions, they’re far more likely to apply skills and ideas effectively to solve problems, complete tasks, and drive results.
Looking back on 2025, it’s safe to say it has been a year full of twists, turns, and uncertainty. The term “dumpster fire” has been used more this year than I’ve ever seen before, and many of us have felt it firsthand. In the midst of the ebbs and flows of change, orientation to learning provides a framework to focus on what truly matters. It helps us identify where we have influence, what is worth our attention, and what we may need to put down. While this principle is often applied to work and career growth, its reflective aspect is invaluable when regrouping or recalibrating becomes necessary.
This reflection perfectly aligns with my first blog of the year – My Word for 2025: Perspective. Perspective allows us to step back and evaluate the year’s events, identifying patterns, lessons, and opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked. Combining orientation to learning with perspective helps illuminate what is most relevant and actionable as we move forward, both in our work and personal lives.
Orientation to learning also reminds us that growth is ongoing. Sometimes pauses are necessary to course-correct and regain momentum. This year, that’s exactly what happened with this blog series. A pause in creation allowed for meaningful developments elsewhere. For instance, in 2025, Sabrina Banks joined Level Up Solutions HRD LLC as a talent acquisition consultant, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our work. We also launched our Talent Acquisition Masterclass, designed to empower teams and organizations with practical strategies focused on interviewing and selection.
Looking ahead to 2026, there’s even more in store. I’m gearing up to share an exciting announcement this spring, designed for anyone engaged in or curious about actionable ways to bridge personal, professional, and organizational growth. Make sure to follow me and Level Up Solutions HRD LLC on LinkedIn and Instagram to stay connected and be among the first to learn more.
As we close out 2025, take a moment to pause, reflect, and consider your own orientation to learning. What has been most relevant this year? What lessons will you take forward? By tuning into what matters most and refining our perspective, we not only honor the experiences of this past year but also set a clear, intentional path for great things in the year to come. Cheers to a reflective close of 2025 and building momentum as we move into 2026.
“The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.”
